[Shopping 0004] Typing anywhere with TapXR sounds awesome, but the device isn't practical
Revolutionary device that will probably flounder
I want to get a TapXR because the concept of limitless typing anywhere is so freaking cool. I am thinking of ways to write when I have a few moments of free time such as when I'm waiting in line to purchase something or when I'm driving and sitting at a stop light. The one challenge is that this despite them having introduced the concept half a decade or so ago with the TapStrap, TapStrap 2, and now the TapXR, typing anywhere is still a new category.
There's not enough interest to have meaningful competition and to my knowledge no one has been able to surpass 100 WPM on it's predecessor the TapStrap 2--something a moderately fast typist on keyboard can do. Also, the concept in general seems pretty buggy with little in terms of tech support. However, that's to be expected with potentially revolutionary technology.
I think one of my biggest gripes is the cost. It's in no-man's land where it's simultaneously too cheap and too expensive. It's too expensive because it lacks features that other wrist accessories have and it's too cheap because it skimped on said features making it a one trick pony that is nice to have, but has nothing most people need. It's a Jack of No Trades.
At $249, they are priced near a non-Apple flagship smartwatch, but it has none of the functionalities. I'm looking at the Google Health, ($299), the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 at ($229.99) and the Garmin Vanu ($249.99). Why in the world didn't they just stick a simple watch with a reliable quartz movement on it so it could kill two birds with one stone and act as a watch and a smart device. If they were so bold they could even make it into a smart watch and price it as a premium watch. Instead, it looks like an upside down bracelet. Consequently, I don't feel comfortable pre-ordering it or even ordering it at all without an ulterior motive. Consequently, I am going to put this on my wishlist and wait to see what the reviews are. If I still want to purchase it later, I' snag one when I'm trying to complete a credit card sign-up bonus (SUB).
